Photographer's Bio
Oregon Native and photographer R.D. "Gus" Frederick will be the featured artist for November in Silverton's new Wine Bar and Gallery, located at 310 Park Street. A reception for the artist will be held Friday, November 7 from 7:00 to 9:00 as part of the monthly Silverton “First Friday” celebration.
Frederick's work ranges from bizarre manipulations of time and light to hap-hazard portraits of friends. He is especially interested in stretching time with long exposures as well as digital and other “behind the curtain” tricks. Whether it is photons or electrons, his work tends to raise question marks above the heads of viewers, as they try to figure not only how certain images were taken, but what those images represent in real life.
For the last several years, he has been working to combine digital effects to traditional photochemical imaging. No stranger sitting in front of a monitor or behind the ground-glass of his Speed Graphic 4x5, Frederick likes to take the best of all worlds and dimensions in the creation of his work.
For his day job, he works as an Instructional Technologist, creating resources for Oregon public school educators. In his spare time, he moonlights as a Martian, providing scientific illustrations and working as a researcher on several projects involving Martian lava tube caves.
An avid caver, in his spare time, he looks forward to spending time with his 18-year-old daughter Genevieve, puttering around in and under the great Oregon outdoors, reading and writing science fiction, listening to and collecting traditional Jazz Records created using analog means at 78 rpm.
